Biotherm SKIN.BEST is Anti-Aging Skincare for a Youthful Expression Against Aging in Motion

I am really starting to notice the effects of aging on my skin. In fact the other week I posted on social media that I was considering giving up smiling because I was so fed up with the changes I saw happening. Biotherm has developed SKIN.BEST which is the first instant correcting and youth-protecting concentrate to target early skins of aging and acknowledges that the signs of aging are most apparent when we are making facial expressions. The wrinkles around our eyes, the deepening nasolabial folds, and the one that has been increasingly driving me nuts; smile lines. For me I find it’s not only the smile lines but the total change in appearance and texture of my skin in that area. Biotherm is addressing our “aging in motion”.

Biotherm Skin Best 1

The key ingredients in the line are:

Astaxanthin – Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant and Astaxanthin rich H.Pluvialis algae extract helps protect keratinocytes from UVA-induced stress which decreases the production of free radicals. It has a longer potency period than most antioxidants like Vitamin C or E meaning it can handle multiple free radicals simultaneously without becoming toxic at high doses. Studies have shown it to be 500-1000x more powerful than Vitamin E and much more powerful than other carotenoids such as lutein, lycopene, and B-carotene.

Spirulina – Spirulina is categorized as one of the greatest energy source on earth being one of the most well balanced sources of nutrition on the plant. It is comprised of at least 60% vegetable protein which means it has double the protein concentration of soy. Now we aren’t going to eat our SKIN.BEST skincare so why is this important? Well the same way it provides vital energy as a food source it also acts as a cellular energy booster to the skin when applied as well as providing cellular protection against free radicals.

The two products I have been testing from the line are the SKIN.BEST Serum-In-Cream and the SKIN.BEST Day Cream SPF 15 for Normal Combination Skin (there is also one available for Dry Skin).

Biotherm Skin Best 2

The SKIN.BEST Serum-In-Cream ($62 CAD/30 ml) provides the efficacy of a serum with the added comfort of a cream. It moisturizes and softens while giving a blurring and mattifying effect on the skin.

The SKIN.BEST Day Cream SPF 15 for Normal Combination Skin ($65 CAD/50 ml) offers the antioxidant youth protecting benefits of the SKIN.BEST actives in a protective cream. There is also a more richly nourishing cream available for Dry Skin also with SPF 15.

If you are looking for more sun protection you could try the SKIN.BEST CC Cream SPF 25 ($40 CAD/30 ml) available in Light and Medium that offers colour correction.

SKIN.BEST Serum-In-Cream, Day Cream SPF 15, and CC Cream are available now. There will also be SKIN.BEST Night and Eye formulations coming out this Fall.

Makeup Wars ~ My Sunscreen Picks for Summer

This week the Makeup Wars team is sharing some of our favourite sunscreen products with you.

My absolute favourite makeup bases containing sunscreen are the shu uemura UV Under Base Mousses. There are several versions available and I have been testing out the ob for shu uemura adorably packaged POREraser in Pink formula as well as the BB version in Beige. These light foams are incredible. The finish they give is so beautiful I hate covering them up with makeup. In fact they even out my skintone enough that I often find myself skipping foundation all together. The SPF ranges from SPF 30 PA+++ to SPF 35 PA+++ depending on the version. They are amazing makeup primers giving your complexion all day lasting power and the fact they include adequate sun protection is such a bonus.

I wear sunscreen on my face year round but when summer comes I amp up the protection. I know the sun is going to be stronger and I am going to be spending more time in it. My favourite chemical based sunscreen continues to be the Algenist Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid SPF 50. It performs beautifully under makeup, dries to a satiny finish, and leaves no white residue.

I have been trying to turn to physical sunscreens more often. I make sure they contain both Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide for broad spectrum protection. The trick with mineral sunscreens can be finding ones that aren’t overly greasy, or that don’t leave a ghostly mask on your face. I have been really loving the Lavanila The Healthy Sunscreen SPF 40 Face Cream (recommended by the beautiful Phyrra) and the Kiss My Face Sunscreen with Hydresia SPF 40. With adequate blending they both blend in clear and offer my skin sufficient hydration without a greasy feel. I do find I have to be careful to blend in really well around my hairline and eyebrows as some whiteness can build up around the hairs if I’m not careful. They both work great under makeup for me. The Lavinila offers a lovely satin finish and the Kiss my Face a quite matte effect. I find they both look really great when I opt to not wear any makeup which I sometimes do at the cottage. It can be hard to find mineral sunscreens that don’t make you look like a greasy ghost!

For face and body I am still loving the MD Solar Sciences line. You can read more about these great products in my original review. I have no complaints with this excellent lineup of broad spectrum mineral sunscreens.

For convenience I love the Ombrelle SPF 60 Face Stick. I can keep it in my purse with me at all times and quickly swipe on my nose or other high points of my face for extra protection. It has a dry touch finish and is totally invisible.

My go to for body sunscreen is the KINeSYS SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray. I started buying the kid’s version in the orange bottle when my daughter was a baby 5 years ago. It has a hazard warning of only 3 on the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database which is why I chose it. I suppose I should have continued trying to find one of the sunscreens with a 0-2 low hazard rating but I just loved this one so much and it works so well. My children have never had the slightest bit of a burn or a tan. They maintain their gloriously white porcelain skin year round. It is super easy to use as it is a clear spray and rubs in easily. It is so hard with kids to get them to sit still long enough to rub thick white goopey sunscreen all over them. Then they end up with every bit of sand and grass stuck to them. This is totally non sticky, fast drying, and invisible. Those are all the reasons I started using this sunscreen on myself. Now it is pretty much all my family uses. It is a chemical sunscreen and not a mineral one. I think I will start trying to use the mineral versions I’ve been loving for my face more on my kids like the MD Solar Sciences.

The only other body sunscreen I sometimes use is the Australian Gold SPF 15 Spray Gel with Bronzer. It smells amazing and helps me build a little bit of colour on my legs while still remaining protected with the broad spectrum protection. I must admit it is the smell and lovely bronze sheen of this product that keeps me searching high and low for it each summer. It can be very hard to find for some reason near me.

Product finder:

So that is my arsenal of sunscreens. It may not be the best curated as I haven’t invested a bunch of money testing out different formulas. I have stuck with what has worked for me. I’m sure there are many new and amazing formulas I should be checking out. MDSolarSciences Mineral Screen Lotion SPF 40, Gel SPF 30+, Tinted Gel SPF 30+, and Stick SPF 40 Review

Being “Perilously Pale”, sunscreen is of great importance to me. I must admit I have a bit of an annoying habit of stressing the importance of sunscreen to young people. I had always thought I was fairly diligent about sunscreen in my youth but the truth is I was not. You TRULY need to wear sunscreen every day if you are to be leaving the house. I have significant pigmentation on my driving side. There were a lot of days where I didn’t think sunscreen was necessary in my 20′s because I was just driving to and from the office. I would give anything to go back and time and undo the damage I did by not wearing a sunscreen everyday. I also visited tanning beds prior to my wedding in Jamaica and a subsequent trip to Cuba because I didn’t want to be lily white and look like a flabby fish and burn instantly. I think those trips to the tanning beds, and coordinating tanning at the cottage in the summers prior to those trips, aged me five years. The pigmentation to my chest in particular simply will not dissipate. My number one skincare goal is to rid my skin of the hyper-pigmentation caused by sun damage. Please don’t make the mistakes I did. OK well now that I have finished preaching to you lets get on with the review!

I was sent some mineral based, (non chemical yay), sunscreens from MDSolarSciences. Refinery29 actually just posted an interview with the GORGEOUS Dita Von Teese where she mentions MDSolarSciences Mineral Screen Lotion SPF 40 as her favourite sun protection!

I received the following products which I have been testing. I have included the ingredients for you as well.

All of the formulas are water resistant for up to 80 minutes.

Here are how the products look out of the bottle and rubbed into the skin. You will see that even the tinted version blends in invisibly. To think I was worried!

IMG_4412 IMG_4415

They all have an incredible silky feel with the tinted version having a bit more of a silicone feel than the other versions. All formulas do include silicones in varying amounts. I was really, really impressed with these sunscreens. None of them felt greasy or heavy. They all applied with a wonderful silky feel and left an invisible, satin matte finish with no stickiness. They just feel good on the skin. Not what you would expect from a sunscreen. I would be confident wearing any of these on my face. They don’t even have any scent. No artificial fragrance or perfumes or even a “sunscreen smell” if you know what I mean. I am truly impressed with these and can’t wait to really put them to the test this summer. These would even make a great last minute stocking stuffer if you have a loved one going on vacation or even just for daily protection for their face. I’m really interested in trying out the kids versions now for my children. Highly recommend.

You can find out about MDSolarSciences products on their website. They also have a store locator feature.
