Makeup Wars | My Favourite Highlighters and Illuminating Products

This week the Makeup Wars members are sharing our favourite illuminating products. This is probably one of my favourite cosmetics categories for two reasons. Firstly I have very dry, dull skin and I need a lot of assistance in the glow department. Secondly I am very picky when it comes to products in this category so finding the right product is always a struggle for me. I guess I kind of enjoy the challenge and the subsequent joy and satisfaction of finding a product that meets my expectations. Why am I so picky? Well when it comes to highlighters and illuminators I do not like glitter. At all. Even shimmer is pushing it. I want the product to offer a natural glow and sheen without looking too sparkly. I want a refined finish.

Illuminating Primers – Give your complexion an all over glow with these illuminating primers. Some are quite sheer like the Burberry Fresh Glow and others more concentrated like the Dior Glow Maximizer.

Dior Glow Maximizer ($42 CAD) has quite a strong golden glow. It can be mixed with your foundation to boost skin’s radiance, patted full strength on top of your makeup as a highlighter in light catching areas, or even used sparingly as a primer all over under foundation if you are in dire need of some radiance as I sometimes do.

Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base – A sheer fluid with very fine champagne shimmer. An amazing primer.

Clarins Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Rose ($37 CAD) this opalescent pink translucent fluid feels hydrating and gives skin a lovely radiance. It feels really light and I adore the finish of the Rose shade. This is a new permanent product released with the spring collection and it also comes in Champagne and Peach.

NARS Pro-Prime Light Optimizing Primer SPF 15 ($38 CAD) has the benefit of light sun protection and it offers a very subtle, completely neutral, illumination to the skin.  It contains red algae to revitalize skin as well as Vitamins A, C, and E to ward off free radicals. It really works well as a base and feels very light, absorbing quickly into the skin.

BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Illuminator SPF25+ – This is an all over moisturizer/primer but is concentrated enough to be used as a spot highlighter as well. Pearl is more my shade but right now I only have a travel size of Opal that I use in my pro kit.

Liquid Highlighters – I love the ease of using a liquid highlighter. You can mix them into your foundation or skincare for a luminous glow or apply them to the high points of your face for a glow that blends right into your skin.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Sea of Tranquility Highlighting Liquid – A opalescent pink highlighter that is highly pigmented.

Benefit High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer – I similar shade to Sea of Tranquility in a slightly sheerer finish.

Benefit Sun Beam Golden Bronze Complexion Highlighter – A warm golden glow. A only have a sample size but this is such a great way to warm the complexion.

Highlighting Pens – I don’t find these really highlight or illuminate much but they work great for brightening up the under eye area and disguising shadows and bags.

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch in 1 and 2

Cream Highlighters – Like liquids these blend in so naturally to the skin for a lit from within glow on the high points of your face.

Edward Bess All Over Seduction in Sunlight – This is a sheer natural champagne shade with a refined glow. A favourite of many Edward Bess fans.

Benefit Watt’s Up! Soft Focus Highlighter – A similar champagne glow as the Edward Bess cream but in a more concentrated stick form.

Powder Highlighters – I find these are the kinds of highlighters are reach for most often as they just seem quicker and easier sometimes. It can be tricky to find ones that aren’t to sparkly and glittery for my taste. Here are some currently available ones that I adore.

Giorgio Armani Belladonna Highlighting Palette – Don’t miss out on this amazing limited edition Spring 2014 highlighter. It has the most stunning champagne sheen and is an incredibly luxurious formula.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Sweet to Touch Highlighting Powder – This more pink toned powder highlighter is incredibly refined, smooth, and naturally luminous.

Limited Edition Discontinued Powder Highlighter Favourites – Highlighters are often part of limited edition seasonal releases and here are some of my no longer available go to favourites.

Makeup Wars – My Favourite Foundations

This week for Makeup Wars we are sharing some of our favourite foundations and BB creams. I have fair skin that is very dry and dehydrated. Sometimes I can have some flakiness around my nose and on my chin. What I look for in a foundation is a formula that will even out the redness in my skin while covering up some of the hyper pigmentation. I need it to have a natural or dewy finish so it doesn’t cause my already dry skin to look look even more parched. It is important to me that I don’t see my foundation and that it doesn’t settle in any lines or emphasize dryness. Now that you know what I look for, let’s see what I love!

Makeup Wars Favorite Foundations

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream - (Light) This is my go too in the summer. It offers SPF 30 mineral protection, a gorgeous dewy finish, and a nice amount of coverage for a bb cream.

Make Up For Ever Face and Body Foundation – (#38) This is one of my all time favourite foundations. It has been on empty forever and I need to restock. It has the most gorgeous natural finish and can be worn sheerly or built up for more coverage. It also happens to be waterproof!

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation – (BR10) I still need to try shade B10 to see if it’s a better match but even though BR10 isn’t quite the perfect shade match I still adore the feel and finish of this exquisite foundation. It offers medium coverage that can come closer to full on me.

Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup - (#3) While this foundation doesn’t look the best on me when my dry skin is really acting up I still love the amazing texture and lightweight feel of this innovative dry oil foundation that offers incredible coverage with a weightless feel.

Make Up For Ever HD Foundation - (#118) I had tried this years ago and didn’t think I liked it on my dry skin. Now that I’ve had the opportunity to give it another chance I have fallen for MUFE HD. It offers medium coverage and is a go to for me when I want a foundation I can put on quickly and know it will look natural.

Face Atelier Ultra Foundation – (#1) This is the foundation I use in my professional kit to give my clients a flawless finish. They are always amazed at the coverage this foundation offers while looking and feeling natural. I really need to get myself my own personal bottle of this for my vanity. I’ve never seen a foundation cover so well yet look so natural.

Ellis Faas Skin Veil Foundation – (S101) This foundation may be pricey but when you want beautiful undetectable coverage with a gorgeous finish this foundation is one of the best.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Time Defying Foundation – (Quinoa Cream) Another beautiful foundation for those of us with dry skin. It doesn’t have a very large shade range but if you can make one of them work the formula and effect of this foundation is truly lovely.

There are certainly many amazing foundations out there and to be fair I should let you know that I haven’t tested all that many. Let’s face it, foundations are pricey. They also are only good for so long once open so if I have a few that are working shade wise I don’t try and find anything new. I wish I could be a foundation junkie and try them all but I am far too frugal! I would love to hear your favourites. Especially if you have fair dry skin like me!

Top Ten Tuesday – My Favourite Glittery Things

Now this is going to be a fun one! This week for Beauty Blogger Top Ten Tuesday we are featuring our 10 favourite glittery products. It is pretty hard to list only 10 so I think I will avoid specific shades and stick to wider product recommendations. Let’s get our sparkle on!

In no particular order:

Top Ten Tuesday Glitter-page-001

  1. Lit Cosmetics Glitters – No one does glitter like Lit Cosmetics. They offer a staggering array of shades in a variety of glitter sizes. See it in action here and here.
  2. Armani Eyes To Kill Eyeshadows – For a more sophisticated hint of glitter the Armani Eyes to Kill Eyeshadows are one of my favourite options for a complex look in one step. There is just something special about the multidimensional finish these eyeshadows offer.
  3. Rouge Bunny Rouge Loose Glitter Pigment - While the name sounds like these are intense in the glitter department they are actually more of a shimmer finish with the most beautiful complexity.
  4. Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquers – No one does glitter like Deborah Lippmann. Her nail lacquers are unique and of incredible quality. Although she is getting a good run for her money from a lot of brands these days as the world of nail polish continues to improve in terms of both mainstream brands and indie offerings.
  5. The Glitter Shades in Dior Eye Shadow Quints – These glitter pans of goodness are gorgeous on the inner corner of the eye or patted on the lid.
  6. L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Gold Dust Nail Polishes - Stay tuned for a review on this new line of nail polishes from L’Oreal that have me swooning.
  7. Lancome Artliner 24H Bold Color Precision Eyeliner - These sparkling eyeliners have an incredibly easy to use felt tip applicator and give a beautiful opaque finish with no yucky tightening on the lid. The shade assortment is beautiful. My favourites are the gold, copper, and turquoise.
  8. Make Up For Ever Diamond Powder - These and the Holodiam Powders from Make Up For Ever are excellent quality pure glitters. Love them!
  9. shu uemura Glitter Pressed Eyeshadows – I love the glitter eyeshadows in my she uemura Orange and Pistachio Palette, Mint and Vanilla Palette, and Smoky Velvet Palette. These look stunning patted on top of other shadows for a gorgeous glittering effect or built up for a more opaque finish.
  10. Mally Beauty Eyeshadow Sticks – Champagne is one of my favourite shades for using on the inner corner of my eye. These beautiful glittery budge proof sticks have the most stunning sparkling shades that last all day.

If you are working with glitter products then don’t forget the Too Faced Insurance Shadow Insurance Glitter Glue. It makes glittery shades adhere and look INCREDIBLE.
